Umrah for Women: A Practical Guide
Clothing, Ihram rules, travelling with or without a mahram, and what to do if your period starts during Umrah.

Women perform Umrah in almost exactly the same way as men, with a few differences in clothing and practice. This guide covers the questions sisters ask us most often.
What to wear
There is no special Ihram garment for women. Wear loose, modest clothing that covers the whole body except the face and hands, in any color. White is common but not required. Breathable cotton or linen is best, and comfortable shoes matter more than anything else.
While in Ihram, women should not wear a niqab that covers the face or gloves on the hands. If men are nearby, many women lower a scarf over the face without it being fixed to the skin, which most scholars permit.
Differences in the rituals
- Women say the Talbiyah quietly rather than aloud.
- Women do not uncover the shoulder in Tawaf and do not jog in the first circuits.
- In Sa'i, women walk normally between the green lights.
- To finish Umrah, women cut a small amount from the end of the hair, about the length of a fingertip. Shaving is not for women.
Travelling with or without a mahram
Saudi rules have allowed adult women to travel for Umrah without a mahram since 2021. The religious ruling is a separate question, and scholars differ on it, so many families still prefer a mahram where possible. If you are travelling without one, joining an organized group is the safest and most comfortable option.
If your period starts
A woman who is menstruating can enter Ihram and do everything except Tawaf. She waits until her period ends, takes a bath, and then performs Tawaf and Sa'i. Meanwhile she can make dua, dhikr and visit the places of Ziyarat.
If your dates are fixed and you are worried, speak to a scholar before you travel. Some women consult their doctor about medication to delay the period, which many scholars allow.
Practical tips
- The women's prayer areas are clearly signposted and staffed by female attendants.
- Rawdah visits for women have their own time slots in the Nusuk app.
- Keep a small bag with tissues, wipes, a spare scarf and a water bottle.
- Agree on meeting points with male relatives, since you may be separated for prayer.
